The Wolf We Draw

Updated: Aug 1

A teacher asked his grade-school students to draw a picture of a wolf. Their drawings all had wolves with sharp fangs and sinister eyes. Then the teacher brought a wolf into the classroom and he spoke about the big animal.

The children gasped, but were not afraid.

He talked about its power, its sense of loyalty and guardianship. He shared stories about the wolf's spirit of teamwork in the pack and its mysterious intuition. He spoke about the wolf's boldness and adaptability.

And he shared a short National Geographic documentary about wolves that were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1995.

The students were fascinated.

After the wolf was removed from the room the teacher asked his students to do another drawing of a wolf.

Their new drawings were bright and colorful, absent of fangs and wicked eyes, but they all had enormous feet.
