I've been flying planes on and off since I was 15 years old. Great aviators like the Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Chuck Yeager, and Col. "Bud" Anderson (in photo above on R) have been heroes of mine as long as I can remember. Movies such as The Right Stuff and Top Gun simply added fuel to my passion for aviation.
So you can imagine how I felt when volunteering at the 2019 Truckee Tahoe Airshow & Family Festival, I discovered Col. "Bud" Anderson giving a talk to a room packed full of enthusiastic die-hard fans. His voice was just a whisper, but it commanded everyone's rapt attention and respect.
I pitched the idea of interviewing WWII fighter pilot, Col. "Bud" Anderson with Tahoe Quarterly Magazine (TQM) shortly after meeting this living legend. After all, Anderson owns a home in Tahoe's North Shore and he's the last living triple ace pilot from the Second World War. It was, and still is, a perfect story for TQM.
I made a friend with Col. Anderson and his son, Jim (on L below), for life.
Anderson, now 99 years old, will be our distinguished speaker, once again, at the Truckee Tahoe Airshow & Family Festival on Saturday, September 11th, 2021. If you and your family have the opportunity, please don't miss this Airshow or Col. "Bud" Anderson's spellbinding talk.
Here's the article in Tahoe Quarterly's Summer 2020 issue: As The Old Crow Flies.
